Rittenhouse Square
Inspiration at the Rittenhouse Square
It has been over 10 years since I left Philadelphia, or, better to say, 10 years since I had one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It didn’t last too long, just 9 months, an academic year, but it was my first time living on my own and so far away (my home country is Spain). It was an amazing experience, and I still feel nostalgic about those days since it had a profound impact on my life.
It helped me in countless ways, and I often emphasize that while the academic aspect was incredible, the lessons I learned outside of campus were just as important as those within the walls of UPENN. It was during this time that my passion for photography truly took flight, all thanks to the introductory course in Black and White Photography. It may have only lasted a single semester, but when you have a genuine passion for something, it’s nearly impossible to forget, isn’t it?
During that semester, I dedicated countless hours to the university’s darkroom, renting equipment and purchasing materials to develop my prints. I also faced challenges at times, struggling to find creativity and inspiration, as the assignments extended beyond the technical aspects, and I was enrolled in other subjects with numerous readings to complete. Nevertheless, that semester in Photography 101 served as a pivotal turning point for me.
The image below was captured in Rittenhouse Square in downtown Philly. I recall that I was out and about, seeking inspiration, and I had spent the entire day (or perhaps the entire morning) wandering the streets of Philadelphia. It sometimes happens to me. When I search for inspiration, I hardly find any. It’s often the case that the best ideas come to me when I’m engaged in other activities – working, reading, watching TV, listening to music, etc.. But when I need it… it’s nowhere to be found!
Well, that was one of those days. I don’t quite recall the exact nature of the assignment, perhaps it was related to light?? I was quite exhausted of wandering for hours and taking pictures in the hope they would work (technically and artistically). As I was about to head to the 19th Street Trolley stop to return to my place, I happened to turn back at the intersection of Walnut and 18th street. Curiosity got the better of me, and I approached the Square’s entrance. What follows is the result of my exhausting day in downtown Philly.
